Dispose of batteries by dropping them off at the following locations: The Berkeley Recycling Center (Community Conservation Centers) at 669 Gilman, Berkeley. Cole Hardware on College Avenue, in the Rockridge neighborhood of Oakland. You can call (510) 230-0145 for their specific hours. As you collect batteries, try to tape their terminals so that any charge left in them might not spark a fire. No charge for up to 5 pounds, or 1 quart. Small fee/lb applies for quantities above limit.

Alternatives

Invest in reusable, rechargeable batteries, but be sure to sort them appropriately during disposal. Or opt for appliances that can be plugged in charged via solar.

Facts

Batteries contain toxic and corrosive chemicals that can hurt people and contaminate soil and water. Batteries are made from materials such as zinc, manganese, potassium, and steel that can be scrapped and recycled at a properly accredited facility.
