Fluorescent bulbs are considered hazardous waste. Drop fluorescents and compact fluorescents off at the Berkeley Community Conservation Center, 1231 Second Street (Mon-Sat 9am-330pm) 510-524-0113 Alternately, dispose of at the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, 2100 E 7th St, Oakland, CA 94606, (800) 606-6606.

Facts

Fluorescent and compact fluorescent bulbs contain trace amounts of mercury, requiring proper handling and certification for final disposal. They are considered Household Hazardous Waste (HHW).
