Instructions
Because real cork is in short supply and difficult to compost, look into cork recycling programs and drop-off locations at your local Whole Foods Market, or Re-Cork locations (closest ReCork drop off is at Sports Basement on Milvia Ave in Berkeley) If you want to put cork in the compost, cut it into small pieces before putting into the green compost cart. Make sure to put plastic corks in the gray landfill cart.
Alternatives
You can purchase wine in bulk from local vineyards and wineries that have a take back and/or reuse program. Cork Recycling programs and drop-off locations are available at your local Whole Foods Market, or Re-Cork drop-off locations.
Facts
Natural cork comes from the bark of cork oak trees and is considered a sustainable material because it's renewable and trees don't need to be cut down to harvest. Cork trees actually absorb more CO2 after the bark is harvested! However, cork often isn't broken down in composting cycles.
