Plastic Clamshells

Updated on July 18, 2019

Clamshell container should be clean. Quickly rinse (or wipe out food or grease into compost) before putting in the blue recycling cart. If clamshell says "compostable," please put it in the green waste cart. BPI certified "compostable" plastics are acceptable in both residential and commercial compost program. If the packaging says “biodegradable” or “biobased” it should be landfilled (gray cart). Biodegradable and biobased materials are not compatible with the composting process.

Opt for a reusable container instead. In general, try to take less food to go by eating at the establishment or preparing more meals at home.

The average American throws away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year.
