Plastic Coffee Cup Lids

Updated on July 18, 2019

Plastic lids (for single-use cups) should be clean. Quickly rinse (or wipe out liquids or food residue into compost) before putting in the blue recycling cart. If lid says "compostable," please put it in the green waste cart. BPI certified "compostable" plastics are acceptable in both residential and commercial compost program. If the packaging says “biodegradable” or “biobased” it should be landfilled (gray cart). Biodegradable and biobased materials are not compatible with the composting process.

Opt for a reusable mug or canteen instead.

If you buy just one cup of coffee or tea in a disposable cup every day, you create ~23 pounds of waste in one year.
