Spray Cans & Bottles

Updated on November 27, 2018

Empty, and separate any components such as nozzles or sprayer heads. Most of these are too small to recycle or made of mixed materials, and will need to go in the gray landfill cart as they can clog the recycling sorting machines. Separately, the metal or plastic containers can go in the blue recycling cart. Partially filled, pressurized containers can perforate and burst during compaction and waste handling, endangering workers. If the pressurized container cannot be emptied, take it to a HHW (Household Hazardous Waste) Facility.

Make your own cleaning products with common household items instead (e.g., baking soda, white vinegar).

Chemical cleaning products often contain ingredients that can be harmful to human health and the environment. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) provides safety ratings for over 2,500 cleaning products.
