String lights or rope lights are made of multi-mixed materials, and are considered hazardous waste which should be disposed of properly, at the Oakland HHW site. If your string lights are still working, consider donating them for second-use. If your string lights are non-working they should be disposed of at the Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility, 2100 E 7th St, Oakland, CA 94606, (800) 606-6606. Facts
String lights contain common recyclable materials like metal, plastic, and sometimes glass. They have a coating of polyvinyl chloride covering copper wiring and fitted with sockets. Most new string lights are also made up of LED bulbs, which are also recyclable. However, these materials in one string, need to be separated in order to be recycled, so they need special care. If they can not be separated, then they are considered Household Hazardous Waste.
