Participate in your organization’s sustainability programs
If your work or campus has environmental goals in place, let them know you support their efforts. Also, do your part to help meet the goals already in place; for example, if your organization has a waste diversion goal, make sure you are sorting your trash properly. If you don’t know if your work or campus is committed to reducing their environmental footprint, you can inquire about it or even encourage others to start. A volunteer day with a local sustainability-related nonprofit is a great way to start thinking about impact, and it helps employees and students feel more connected to the community and to each other.
Instead of buying paper textbooks, look into buying or renting e-textbooks. By using digital textbooks, you can avoid paper use. Plus, digital books are easier to carry around on your laptop or tablet, and save you space in your dorm or apartment. If you can’t go digital, try to buy used books, look into services that rent by the semester or quarter, and/or be sure to sell back your books when you are done with them so that others can use them. All of these options are cheaper than buying new hardcover textbooks.
