Light Bulbs

Instructions

Fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent lightbulbs (CFL), HID lightbulbs (High-Intensity Discharge lamps, or electrical gas-discharge lamps), and LEDs require special handling. Take to Berkeley Recycling Station (2nd St. @ Gilman St.), or to Alameda County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility, 2100 E. 7th St., Oakland, CA.

Berkeley Recycling Station (2nd St. @ Gilman St.) cannot accept broken fluorescent lights - you may enclose in a bag or wrap and tape and dispose in the gray landfill cart.

Old incandescent lightbulbs and halogen lightbulbs can be placed in your gray landfill cart.

Alternatives

LEDs are the most energy-efficient light bulbs, and should last at least 7-10 years depending on use.

Facts

It is estimated that 670 million fluorescent light bulbs are placed into our environment annually in the U.S. alone. Together, all of these light bulbs can potentially cause the release of as much as 4 tons of mercury each year into our environment.
